Your News... In Real-Time!

At Bruce Middle School we've decided to go paperless with our newsletter.

There are two advantages to this:

- The saving of paper is a savings in costs and more importantly another step in our ongoing commitment to sustainability.

- By offering news in this format, we can now provide our community with real-time news as it happens, instead of waiting until the end of the month to send out information.

Grade 7 Vision Screening Program

Grade Seven Vision Screening Program
December 15, 16, 17

Vision Screening Programs can lead to the identification and prevention of student vision difficulties.  In that regard, our school will be conducting a Vision Screening Program for students in grade seven during the above-noted dates.  Please be aware that this should not be considered a thorough vision examination.

Only parents/guardians of students identified as “at risk” will receive a follow-up letter indicating the area of difficulty and a letter suggesting the need for an appointment with an eye care practitioner.

Students who are currently wearing glasses will not be screened.  If your child  has had a recent vision examination, or if you require further information, please contact our Resource Teacher, Ms Carlson.

Pancakes & Portfolios!

Pancakes & Portfolios

November 18th, 2014
4:30 – 6:30 p.m.

On Tuesday November 18th,
Bruce Middle School will be hosting a Pancakes & Portfolios Evening! Your child will lead you through a portfolio collection of their learning. They will present artifacts that represent their learning and they will also perform some live tasks, including making pancakes for you to enjoy!
This will be done in the place of traditional parent-teacher interviews to place a greater emphasis on student learning. Teachers will also be available in the gym during this time to speak with you about your child's learning.
We hope that you will find this casual format both inviting and informative, as your child leads you through examples of their learning. Should there be a reason that you need a private face-to-face conversation with any teacher, we will have meeting rooms available upon request.
If you have questions about this evening, please contact us at the school and we will be happy to help.
Sincerely,

Walt Lipinski
Principal
Bruce Middle School

Bruce Joins CoCoRAHS Team!

Bruce students have officially joined the CoCoRAHS team! The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network, or CoCoRAHS, is a non-profit, community-based network of volunteers working to measure and map precipitation across Canada and the United States.

In mid October, Tiffiny Talyor, Program Coordinator for CoCoRaHS Manitoba, visited Bruce Middle School to introduce the program to Mr. Fisher-Smith’s Grade 8 science classes.  Using chocolate chip cookies as an analogy, Ms. Taylor showed how the chocolate chips are similar to weather stations – the more chocolate chips the better!

Doing their part to support the precipitation monitoring, the BMS Grade 8 students set up their very own precipitation gauge and made their first of many precipitation measurements on October 29, 2014 observing that 0.2 mm of rain had fallen in the previous 24-hour period at station number: CAN-MB-198 (Winnipeg 9.8 W –BruceMdlSchool).

You can follow the school’s precipitation monitoring at http://data.cocorahs.org/cocorahs/maps/?country=can

To join the CoCoRAHS program or for more information please visit http://cocorahs.org/Canada.aspx or email Tiffiny Taylor at tiffiny.taylor@fbcpublishing.com or manitoba@cocorahs.org.
