Your News... In Real-Time!

At Bruce Middle School we've decided to go paperless with our newsletter.

There are two advantages to this:

- The saving of paper is a savings in costs and more importantly another step in our ongoing commitment to sustainability.

- By offering news in this format, we can now provide our community with real-time news as it happens, instead of waiting until the end of the month to send out information.

                       Anxiety
          Coaching For Confidence

Presented by: Dr. Maria Phelps, School Psychologist, Educational Support Services, St. James-Assiniboia School Division

Shyness and anxiety are normal human emotions.  Some children, however, are much more shy or fearful than the average child.  For these children, anxiety may interfere with their enjoyment of school, activities with other children, new experiences (swimming lessons, birthday parties, etc.), and their development of independence and confidence. In this session, parents will learn about anxiety in children aged four to seven and gain useful tools to help your children overcome this problem.
Once registered for any session, if you cannot attend, please be sure to cancel by email to ptregistrations@sjsd.net

Project Runway Recycled Runway: Wear It Out!

Bruce Middle School held its 5th annual Recycled Runway Fashion Show and Competition on March 26th.  50 young artists in grade 7 worked in teams of 4 or 5 to come up with an original outfit made entirely of recycled items.  Students went on a field trip to Arts Junktion MB where they collected over 50 cubic feet of used materials.  They also collected items on their own, and elicited help from Bruce staff and students and families in the community.   It was a 3-month process from the drawing of designs to students strutting their stuff on the Bruce Bearcat-walk.

The audience members were the judges, and got to vote for their 3 favourites at digital polling stations run by Bruce students.  The winning team, “The Fantastic Four” made “Floral Frenzy” from recycled fake flowers and leaves, used bottle corks, and recycled fabric.

This year's new Open Category Competition allowed students that were not part of the grade 7 art program to take part as well.  In grade 6, the winner was Licenny A. wearing “Flower Girl” which she fashioned from unused collected restaurant napkins, used buttons, fake flowers, and a garbage bag train.

Finally, in Grade 8, “Sourpatch Kids” was the winning design.  The colourful two piece outfit used recycled paper cups, used construction paper, and recycled fabric and tulle.

Lauren W. was a wonderful Master of Ceremonies, rockiní a dress she made out of used denim pieces.

The show also featured a mascot, “XYZ,” more commonly known as Mylo F. , as well as singing performances by Bruce students.  Songs centered around a denim theme, since the fashion show included a denim drive, where used denim was collected for use in the art program.

Check out the slideshow for more great photos of this event.

LEARNING IN A DIGITAL WORLD

Middle Years iPad Initiative Parent Feedback Evening

As you are aware the St. James-Assiniboia School Division Digital Learning Initiative has provided each middle years student with an iPad Mini. The purpose of this initiative is to create digital learning environments to improve student learning and the facilitation of the 5Cs (communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and global citizenship) in all middle years classrooms.

In our second year of this initiative the Division would like to extend an invitation for feedback from parents of middle years students. The Division is working with IBM to collect this input as well as have conversations with staff and students throughout this school year. The Division would very much appreciate including parent feedback as we reflect and refine the initiative moving forward. The format of the evening will consist of facilitated groups of parents responding to questions. Responses will be gathered and collated by the facilitators.
