Your News... In Real-Time!

At Bruce Middle School we've decided to go paperless with our newsletter.

There are two advantages to this:

- The saving of paper is a savings in costs and more importantly another step in our ongoing commitment to sustainability.

- By offering news in this format, we can now provide our community with real-time news as it happens, instead of waiting until the end of the month to send out information.

CHANGE OF LOCATION FOR PROVINCIAL BEACH TOURNAMENT FRIDAY, JUNE 2ND

Dear Parents/Guardians

As you know the Provincial Beach tournament is this Friday June 2, 2017. I have been informed that the tournament venue has changed from Adrenaline Adventures to the Cindy Klassen Rec Plex located at 999 Sargent Avenue. All athletes must be at the site prior to 8:45am for a meeting with the conveners, the first game will start at 9:10am. Since there has been a change in venue we have decided to book a bus to get all athletes to and from the venue instead of private cars. Thank you to all the parents who offered to drive, you are still welcome to join us for the day!

All athletes must be at Bruce at 8am for attendance check-in and we will be boarding the bus and leaving at 8:10am sharp, if your son or daughter is not there on time the bus will be leaving (the company did us a huge favour to rearrange drivers). We will be taking a bus back to school but we will not return until approx. 4pm.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but we know it will be a great event for our athletes and are excited for Friday! Please ensure your son/daughter is dressed appropriately with warm clothes for the morning and a change of clothes if needed for the afternoon. Also some sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses are always needed on long days outside. Students will need to ensure they bring food for the entire day, they are working on getting a canteen but it will be better to bring healthy snacks and a lunch.

Sport Camp Information

Any grade 6 or 7 students interested in attending a sport camp this summer and would like to apply for a sports scholarship please contact Mrs. Goetz at kimgoetz@sjsd.net. Please indicate which camp you are registering for, the cost of the camp, and a copy of the camp confirmation would be appreciated.

There is no guarantee that a scholarship will be given, however we will try to accommodate as many students as possible. Scholarships will be given at the sports awards on June 21st, 2017.  Scholarships are given to grade 6 and 7 students returning to Bruce Middle School next year. The camps that will be considered for scholarships are sport activities that we participate in during the school year such as volleyball, basketball, curling, track and field, badminton and Rugby. Below are some camp suggestions that you may want to consider for your child.

Bruce Middle School Sports Awards

Bruce Middle School Sports Awards

This year we have decided to change how we highlight and honour the many exceptional athletes we have at Bruce Middle School. In the past we have organized a Sports Breakfast which was always a great event, however not all students could attend and therefore could not see the great accomplishments of our school teams. We have decided to have our Sports Awards at Bruce Middle School on Wednesday June 28th, 2017 at 9:00am. This is an opportunity to celebrate the success of all our extra-curricular sports teams throughout the year. All students, staff, parents and extended family members are encouraged to attend. If you have any questions, please phone Mrs. Goetz or at 204-888-1990.

The Spring Concert

Dear Bruce Band Parents,

Just a reminder that the Bruce Spring Concert is next Wednesday, May 17th. All students in the Band program (Grade 6, 7, & 8) are expected to attend and should arrive at 6:40 pm (6:20 pm for Jazz Band students). Students should be dressed in their uniform (music shirt/black pants/socks/shoes). Out of respect for the performers, all audience members are asked to stay until the end of the concert, approximately 8:15 pm.

The Spring Concert showcases the incredible progress each Band and Choir has made since September. It is very important that ALL students participate. Please make sure that if you have any Wednesday evening commitments that you inform your coach/instructor/teacher ahead of time that you will be missing to attend this concert. Also, we are looking for parents willing to supervise students in the warm-up rooms. If you are available, please let Mrs. Johnson know (tjohnson@sjsd.net).

Looking forward to a magical evening of music making!

Kind regards,
Mrs. Tara Johnson, Band Director

    Winnipeg Wildcats

Winnipeg Wildcats is a new basketball program looking for experienced female players born in 2004 & 2005. Our initial agenda is to submit a team in the Philippine Basketball Association year end tournament which takes place June 2-4. This will be the last opportunity of the current basketball season to get our players an opportunity to compete together as a team. It will also be a valuable opportunity for our program to get some exposure before we switch focus to planning for the 2017/18 season.

Here is the link to the PBA tournament:

The Winnipeg Wildcats program has been approved by Basketball Manitoba and has been promoted on their website and social media outlets.

Our contact at Basketball Manitoba is executive director, Adam Wedlake, adam@basketballmanitoba.ca

    Student Absences

Attention Parents – the office makes multiple calls daily for attendance purposes. If your child will not be attending school, could you please contact the office to let us know either at 204-888-1990 or e-mail llelieveld@sjsd.net. We need to make 1-3 calls on average, per student, to determine why a student is away, as schools have a legal responsibility to check on each student, each day, when they are not in the building. Thanks in advance.
