Your News... In Real-Time!

At Bruce Middle School we've decided to go paperless with our newsletter.

There are two advantages to this:

- The saving of paper is a savings in costs and more importantly another step in our ongoing commitment to sustainability.

- By offering news in this format, we can now provide our community with real-time news as it happens, instead of waiting until the end of the month to send out information.

Personal Safety Presentations

Over the course of the next few months, students at Bruce Middle School will have the opportunity to participate in a number of presentations regarding personal safety.  These presentations are based on topics specifically relevant to each grade level.  Below you will find a brief overview and listing of basic details for each presentation; should you have any further questions, please call or email Mr. Lipinski (wlipinski@sjsd.net), Mr. Lister (alister@sjsd.net) or Mrs. Sparrow (nsparrow@sjsd.net) at Bruce Middle School, 888-1990.

All grade 7 students will be participating in the division mandated ‘SafeTeen’ program.  SafeTeen works with boys and girls separately, in small group settings to promote assertiveness, healthy relationships, and personal safety strategies.  Morning sessions will be taking place from 9:00- 11:40, and students will have opportunity to ask questions, as well as participate in the program.

Throughout this school year, all grade 7 and 8 students will be participating in AFM ‘Healthy Choices’ presentations to support our physical education and health curricular outcomes including: 4 kinds of health, alcohol and drugs - definition, types, drug classes, definition of addiction, signs of harmful use, why people experiment/continue use and things you can do if you are worried about your use or someone else.  The purpose of these presentations is to give the students a brief overview of the above topics and to familiarize them with our AFM division personnel, who work in the high schools.  Grade 7 students will have a total of 5 presentations between October and May, and Grade 8 students will have 3 presentations, between November and February.

All grades will have the opportunity to see Winnipeg Police Constable Andrea Cain, continuing presentations to the students that have been in place for many years.   Grade 6 students will be receiving information on making positive choices, as well as cyber bullying.  Grade 7 topics will be Internet Safety and further information on cyber bullying, and Grade 8’s will be focusing on drug and gang awareness.  Constable Cain will do the first set of presentations in December, followed by the second set in the early spring.

Please do not hesitate to contact the school with any questions or concerns with the above material.
