Your News... In Real-Time!

At Bruce Middle School we've decided to go paperless with our newsletter.

There are two advantages to this:

- The saving of paper is a savings in costs and more importantly another step in our ongoing commitment to sustainability.

- By offering news in this format, we can now provide our community with real-time news as it happens, instead of waiting until the end of the month to send out information.

Bruce Winter Concert

Just a reminder that the Bruce Winter Concert is next Wednesday, December 7th at 7pm. The Grade 7 & 8 Jazz Bands will be providing some preconcert entertainment starting at 6:40 pm. All students in the Band program (Grade 6, 7, & 8) are expected to attend and should arrive at 6:40 pm (6:20 pm for Jazz Band students). Students should be dressed in their uniform (music shirt/black pants/socks/shoes). Students who ordered music shirts will receive them by the end of this week. Out of respect for the performers, all audience members are asked to stay until the end of the concert, approximately 8:15 pm.

The Winter Concert showcases the incredible progress each Band and Choir has made since September. It is very important that ALL students participate. Please make sure that if you have any Wednesday evening commitments that you inform your coach/instructor/teacher ahead of time that you will be missing to attend this concert. Also, we are looking for parents willing to supervise students in the warm-up rooms. If you are available, please let Mrs. Johnson know (tjohnson@sjsd.net).

Looking forward to a magical evening of music making!

Kind regards,

Mrs. Tara Johnson, Band Director

Message from the Leadership Team

Hello our names are Lauren, Ethan and Steven and we are members of the Leadership team at Bruce Middle School. Over the past 4 years there has been a White Elephant Sale at Bruce Middle School. This was started so all students would be able to buy a special gift for members of their family at a very reasonable cost(most items are not over 50 cents).  It was started by Mrs. Ames and Ms Magyar but this year they have asked the Leadership Team to help out and we are very excited to take on this event! This year we will be calling it Bruce’s Holiday Workshop since this is an opportunity to buy gifts for family members for the upcoming Holidays. The event will take place on December 13-15 in the library. Now to make this event successful we are asking for some help from all the students as Bruce Middle School. Donations are needed to make this even successful so please look around your house to see if there are any new or gently used items that just need a loving home. All donations can be dropped off in the gym each morning, some suggestions are: toys, book, games, puzzles, Christmas decorations, Picture frames, candles, soaps etc. Monetary donations will also be much appreciated and that money will be used to buy raffle items which have always been a huge hit for this event! All proceeds from the event will be given to the breakfast program at Bruce Middle School.  If you have any questions about the event please ask a leadership student, Ms Magyar or Mrs. Goetz and they will be happy to help out. Thanks for your support!

Bullying Awareness Week

Bullying Awareness Week:  November 13-19, 2016

At Bruce, we focus on promoting KINDNESS for Bullying Awareness.  This week, we have done a number of activities to promote kindness within our community.  One activity we would like to share with our parents is the video "The Science of Happiness" that we watched in BLAST, and had discussions around how gratitude makes us happier and can shape how we treat others.  Feel free to enjoy the video, and pay it forward!   (Remember to 'Skip the Ad' so that you aren't being forced to watch commercials)

Portfolio Evening

https://flic.kr/p/kbGohi
On November 15th 2016, Bruce Middle School will be hosting a Portfolio Evening! You will have the opportunity to meet each of your child’s classroom teachers, on a drop-in basis in their classroom (no appointments necessary).  In each classroom, your child will demonstrate their learning through samples of their work and/or performance activities.

We hope that you will find this format both inviting and informative, as your child
leads you through examples of their learning. Should there be a reason that you need a private face-to-face conversation beyond this meeting, please talk to the teacher to schedule a follow up meeting.

If you have questions about this evening, please contact us at the school and we will be happy to help.

Please note that our Scholastic Book Fair will be set up in our library on this evening as well.  We invite you to browse and buy as you wish!

MTS Orange Shirt Day at Bruce

MTS Orange Shirt Day at Bruce

On Friday, Sept 30, students and staff participated in The Manitoba Teacher’s Society Orange Shirt Day to honour survivors of residential schools and to acknowledge that every child matters. The day is part of the Truth and Reconciliation: Calls to Action on Education. Students and staff wore orange as a sign of respect and to raise awareness about the “cultural genocide” on the First Nations people, brought on by residential schools. Students also participated in class activities to highlight the importance of respecting diversity at school and beyond.
