Your News... In Real-Time!

At Bruce Middle School we've decided to go paperless with our newsletter.

There are two advantages to this:

- The saving of paper is a savings in costs and more importantly another step in our ongoing commitment to sustainability.

- By offering news in this format, we can now provide our community with real-time news as it happens, instead of waiting until the end of the month to send out information.

The Spring Concert

Dear Bruce Band Parents,

Just a reminder that the Bruce Spring Concert is next Wednesday, May 17th. All students in the Band program (Grade 6, 7, & 8) are expected to attend and should arrive at 6:40 pm (6:20 pm for Jazz Band students). Students should be dressed in their uniform (music shirt/black pants/socks/shoes). Out of respect for the performers, all audience members are asked to stay until the end of the concert, approximately 8:15 pm.

The Spring Concert showcases the incredible progress each Band and Choir has made since September. It is very important that ALL students participate. Please make sure that if you have any Wednesday evening commitments that you inform your coach/instructor/teacher ahead of time that you will be missing to attend this concert. Also, we are looking for parents willing to supervise students in the warm-up rooms. If you are available, please let Mrs. Johnson know (tjohnson@sjsd.net).

Looking forward to a magical evening of music making!

Kind regards,
Mrs. Tara Johnson, Band Director

    Winnipeg Wildcats

    Winnipeg Wildcats is a new basketball program looking for experienced female players born in 2004 & 2005. Our initial agenda is to submit a team in the Philippine Basketball Association year end tournament which takes place June 2-4. This will be the last opportunity of the current basketball season to get our players an opportunity to compete together as a team. It will also be a valuable opportunity for our program to get some exposure before we switch focus to planning for the 2017/18 season.

    Here is the link to the PBA tournament:

    The Winnipeg Wildcats program has been approved by Basketball Manitoba and has been promoted on their website and social media outlets.

    Our contact at Basketball Manitoba is executive director, Adam Wedlake, adam@basketballmanitoba.ca

    Student Absences

    Attention Parents – the office makes multiple calls daily for attendance purposes. If your child will not be attending school, could you please contact the office to let us know either at 204-888-1990 or e-mail llelieveld@sjsd.net. We need to make 1-3 calls on average, per student, to determine why a student is away, as schools have a legal responsibility to check on each student, each day, when they are not in the building. Thanks in advance.

    2017 Spaghetti Bridge Competition

    Bruce Students Successful at the 2017 Spaghetti Bridge Competition

    Each year the Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba hold a spaghetti bridge competition. The goal is simple: build the strongest structure from 350 grams of spaghetti and glue. With this in mind, the grade 7 science students explored the Forces & Structures unit with pasta and wood glue in Mrs. Bouchard’s and Mr. Fisher-Smith’s classes. At the end of the unit, the entire grade 7 class entered their structures in competition at Kildonan Place on Thursday, March 9.

    At the mall, the students waited patiently as volunteers from the Engineers and Geoscientists measured each group’s bridge: did the students meet the required parameters of length, height, and mass? After completing registration, the engineers carefully placed each team’s structure in the hydraulic press, affectionately known as the “Dream Crusher”. In seconds, the bridges were stressed to the max and students eagerly recorded the maximum mass held by their bridges while the judges gave some advice on the construction. Every kilogram supported by bridges was tallied by the organizers who later used this total to make a donation to Winnipeg Harvest!

    After three days of competition among students from across the province, Bruce students did extremely well. The team of Igor, Steven, and Korbin won the grade 7 level and received certificates and $100.

    In addition to the grade 7 team, many grade 8 students participated in the contest as well, entering their structures on Saturday, March 11. The team of Katryna and Miree won the grade 8 level and also received certificates and $100. In addition, everyone who participated in the spaghetti bridge building competition will be celebrating with a pizza party sponsored by the Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba.

    Congratulations Bruce students!

    Mumps in Manitoba

    Health, Seniors and Active Living

    Active Living, Population and Public Health Branch Communicable Disease Control
    4th Floor – 300 Carlton, Winnipeg MB R3B 3M9 T  204-788-6737   F 204-948-2190

    24 February 2017

    Attention: Parents and Guardians

    RE: Mumps in Manitoba

    Since September 2016, Manitoba has been experiencing an outbreak of Mumps. As of February 10, 2017 there have been 162 confirmed cases. In recent weeks the spread of mumps has expanded throughout Manitoba and now includes cases in pre-school and school aged populations. Manitoba Health, Seniors and Active Living (MHSAL) would like to ensure that all parents and guardians are aware of the situation and know how to recognize the symptoms of mumps, understand how to prevent its spread and know what to do if they suspect they or their child(ren) may be infected with the mumps virus.

    The mumps virus can be spread to others from two to three days before symptoms appear until four to five days after symptoms appear. Some people infected with mumps may not have any symptoms at all, but can still spread the virus to other people.

    What are the signs and symptoms of mumps?

    Mumps often starts with cold-like symptoms, including:
    ·         Swollen and tender glands at the jaw line on one or both sides of the face;
    ·         Fever; and,
    ·         Headache and muscle aches.

    Although there can be rare complications from mumps, such as hearing loss and sterility, the vast majority of cases are mild, with full recovery in one to two weeks.

    How is mumps spread?

    Mumps is spread by direct contact with the saliva of an infected person, such as through coughing, sneezing, sharing drinks (e.g. water bottles, straws) or kissing.

    A person with no symptoms can transmit infection. Individuals with mumps will be asked to restrict their contact with others to reduce the possible spread of mumps.

    Mumps prevention

    To reduce the spread of mumps, people should:
    ·         wash their hands often with soap and water or use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available;
    ·         avoid sharing drinking glasses or eating utensils;
    ·         cover coughs and sneezes with the forearm or a tissue; and,
    ·         STAY HOME when sick.

    Immunization against mumps using a mumps-containing vaccine is available free-of-charge to Manitobans as part of Manitoba’s Routine Immunization Schedule with the following Vaccine Eligibility Criteria:
    ·         All children 12 months of age or older are eligible to receive 2 doses of MMRV vaccine. Doses are administered at 12 months and 4-6 years of age.

      • Those born during or after 1985 are eligible for 2 doses of MMR vaccine;
      • Those born between 1970 and 1984 who have not received a vaccine containing measles or mumps or have not had natural measles or mumps infection are eligible for one dose of MMR vaccine;
      • Non-immune health care workers, regardless of age, are eligible for 2 doses of MMR vaccine; and,
      • Non-immune students born before 1970 are eligible for 1 dose; students born in 1970 or later are eligible for 2 doses of MMR vaccine.

    Contact your health care provider to determine if you need to be immunized against mumps.

    What to do if you think you or your child(ren) have mumps

    People who think they might have mumps, or have been in close contact with someone who has been diagnosed with mumps, should phone their health care provider or phone Health Links - Info Santé at 204-788- 8200 or 1-888-315-9257 (toll-free) for more information.

    If visiting a physician or health care provider, it is best to call ahead and make an appointment so health care staff can take steps to reduce the exposure of other people to the virus.

    For more information about mumps, visit the MHSAL mumps disease webpage at: www.gov.mb.ca/health/publichealth/diseases/mumps.html.
