Your News... In Real-Time!

At Bruce Middle School we've decided to go paperless with our newsletter.

There are two advantages to this:

- The saving of paper is a savings in costs and more importantly another step in our ongoing commitment to sustainability.

- By offering news in this format, we can now provide our community with real-time news as it happens, instead of waiting until the end of the month to send out information.

As the snow is melting away, many of us are thinking ahead to summer and all that lies ahead. Summer time is the perfect time for students to work on their skills through various athletic camps. At Bruce, we have scholarships available to help pay for a portion of the camp for students in grade 6-7. If funds are available, grade 8 students will be considered for scholarships as well. All parents and students need to do is contact Mrs. Sproll to apply for a scholarship. Proof of camp registration is required in order to qualify. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Sproll at 204-888-1990 or ksproll@sjsd.net.

On March 16th 2016, Bruce Middle School will be hosting a Term 2, Pastries & Portfolios Evening!

For parents that have participated in one of our past portfolio evenings, term 2 portfolios may look a bit different from what you have seen before.  Please join us for our **New and Improved**version of the Bruce portfolio.  The focus of our term 2 portfolios is to provide each child with an opportunity to highlight and tell their story about their life at Bruce Middle School.  We have encouraged students to be creative, descriptive and authentic in telling their story.  Some ideas that students will be sharing may include: favourite friends, extra-curricular activities, volunteer work, books they like to read, academic areas they are proud of, academic areas they need to improve on, things they are looking forward to, interests, etc.

Your child will take the time to share their story with you during one of the evening sessions. There will also be opportunities for students to perform some live tasks, and of course they will be serving pastries/cookies for you to enjoy!

Portfolio sharing will be done in the place of traditional parent-teacher interviews so that students can place a greater emphasis on their learning and the many amazing school experiences that Bruce Middle School offers to them. Teachers will also be available in the gym during this time to speak with you about your child's learning.

We hope that you will find this casual format both inviting and informative, as your child leads you through examples of their learning. Should there be a reason that you need a private face-to-face conversation with any teacher, we will have meeting rooms available upon request.

Please indicate which session you will be attending.  Registration is available on our blog or visit the sites indicated below.  In the event that you do not have access to internet, please feel free to contact Luann at Bruce Middle School 204-888-1990 to register.  Please register on or before March 15th 2016.

Grade 8 Field Trip to Manitoba Museum

On January 29, the grade 8's went to the Manitoba Museum where they explored various components of museum's vast offerings. Students took part in a hands-on Mummies Workshop where they learned about and explored the history and process of ancient Egyptian Mummification rituals. They also explored the National Geographic Earth Explorers Exhibit, complete with interactive App on their iPads to enhance their understanding of the jobs scientists and photographers experience while researching animals within their natural habitats around the globe.

Any field trip to the museum would not be complete without a tour of the galleries, including Earth History, Boreal Forest, Nonsuch, Parklands/Grasslands, Métis, and Urban galleries. Students participated in a scavenger hunt activity as they explored on a self-guided tour.

The next Grade 8 filed trip will be on February 19 to the Festival du Voyageur.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM THE BRUCE PARENT COUNCIL

Hello Bruce Families. Bruce Staff Appreciation Week is February 8-12. We are looking for families to contribute something to help celebrate the great staff at Bruce!

There is a daily dinner draw. We ask that a complete meal be donated. Each day the dinner is raffled off and a lucky staff goes home that night with a meal that only requires heating up. We are looking for two more dinners.

Also, Wednesday, a soup lunch will be provided for the Bruce staff along with dessert. We have enough soup but are still looking for dessert donations. They will either be served at the lunch on Wednesday or they will be added to the daily dinner draws (if we get too many.)

If you are able to contribute to this staff appreciation in any way, please contact Janet McLeod at janetlarrymcleod@mymts.net or Tara Davidson at tnb@mymts.net.

                                                  Thanks so much!
